I don't mind chatting with customers, but some of them want to get way too much into details and personal stuff. Even weirder, I had a woman ask me so many questions about my job and the store itself last week, that if I didn't know better, I'd think Walmart hired a secret shopper for our store (they're too cheap for that). Are people really that lonely that they have to talk to us to get any kind of meaningful human interaction?
I know, it can be exhausting. I have a system with my buddy from work that deals with chatty customers. If the customer is too chatty I signal my coworker and he comes over to me , apologizes that he’s interrupting and says that something urgent is up and he needs my help. Then I excuse myself. That’s it.
Be polite, hear them out for a couple of minutes, then say that your boss is asking for you at another part of the store. That usually does the trick.

You must be working at one of the NHMs. The only 'chatter' I ever get is about discounted items.
