Saw someone shoplifting today… and honestly, I didn’t care

So I work at Walmart. Been here a couple years, mostly stocking and helping customers, nothing too wild. Today while I was zoning shelves, I saw this guy slide some baby formula and a couple canned goods into his jacket. We made eye contact for like half a second… and I just turned back to what I was doing.

Look, I know technically I’m supposed to report it. But I’m not about to chase someone down or snitch over a few bucks worth of food. Especially when it’s basic stuff like formula and canned beans. That’s not someone running off with a flat screen, that’s someone trying to feed a kid or just themselves.

Walmart makes billions. Like literal billions. Meanwhile, some folks out here are choosing between dinner and rent. I’m not gonna be the guy making life harder for someone already struggling, just to protect corporate profits. Not worth it.

Anyway, just wanted to put that out there. I know some people will say theft is theft, and yeah, maybe. But there’s a difference between surviving and stealing for fun. I know which one I saw today.

Anyone else feel the same?

You aren't authorized to confront a shoplifter. However, you should contact mgmt. or loss prevention. Stealing isn't cool. It makes prices go up for everyone.

Typically if you tell someone they do nothing and most of all it seems they don't want to be terminated either by management for taking any action that would be interpreted as "endangering" yourself or others. The "dysfunctional" rules only punish those that are trying to deter theft. If a business wants to truly do something about it they should hire a professionally trained and educated security service to enforce and be support 100% to do that job, and if not, don't do anything. It is not healthy, safe, or functional to train employees to watch and report people stealing. It is a waste of their time, hours that could be given to frontline employees that provide services in understaffed areas such as frontend which is the last opportunity to engage a customer and leave a good memory.
