Is it just me or is onboarding totally different now?

Back when I started, orientation was a full-day thing with actual people explaining stuff—HR talked to us, we had that weird training video with the Walmart cheer, and a supervisor walked us through each department. My little cousin just got hired last week and his "onboarding" was a laptop, some e-learning, and a ten-minute tour by a guy who didn’t even work in his department. He said no one told him how to clock in, where to stash his lunch, or what his job actually involved. He ended up following another associate around like a shadow. I know we’re trying to move faster, but come on. First days already su^k—do they really need to be confusing too? #Onboarding #HR

So sad they eliminated the training coordinator positions. That was, as you say, a full day of training by a long term associate who would go over everything from punching in at the time clock, showing everyone where the exit doors are in case of emergency, introducing you to associates you would be working with, etc. etc. This is why there is a big turnover of associates. At our store we would follow up with new associates after a month, 3 months, and six months intervals to see how they were doing and if there was anything they had concerns with.
