In many states, Walmart pays out unused PTO when an associate leaves, giving a financial cushion between jobs.
I thought you had to use PTO or lose it?
Depends on the state law. In CA, they have to pay it out by law.
True, but some states let companies set “use it or lose it” policies. Walmart complies with whichever applies.
My last store manager tried to tell me I’d lose my PTO. HR corrected him quick.
Saved mine for the end on purpose. Felt like a mini severance.
I didn’t know about this when I quit in 2019—left 50 hours on the table. Still mad about it.
They do pay it out, but make sure your hours are approved in the system before you leave.
This is one area where Walmart beats Amazon, who only pays out in certain states.
I had over 100 hours. That payout kept me afloat until I found my next job.
Not sure why more people don’t talk about this—free money if you plan it right.
Just remember PTO payout is taxed at a higher rate, so don’t be shocked by the check.
Best strategy is to take just enough PTO through the year to avoid burnout but still leave a chunk for the payout.
Do part-timers get this too?
If they’ve accrued PTO and their state requires payout, yes.
Between this and the retirement contributions, Walmart’s long-term game is stronger than people give credit for.
Benefits are good, but still doesn’t fix how hard the work can be in stores.

Left in June with 86 PTO hours banked—got a nice $1,500 check a week later.
