Is it the usual model to work with a skeleton crew and not even try to staff the store properly to see how far you can push those who are there?

I agree, every store is understaffed, but I wouldn’t be too surprised. At my store the manager always promises that we will take care of that but it never happens. My take is that there are a couple of factors that create this type of situation. First, the company is generally satisfied with understaffed stores. Second, not many people want to work in this business long term so people are always leaving the moment something better comes up. Third, the way they treat the employees is also something that makes people leave all the time. To sum it up, don’t ever expect this issue to be solved, just learn to operate with it.
