Microsoft L60 engineers earn ~$225K/year. Walmart’s L5 pays ~$204K. The gap isn’t huge—but Microsoft’s brand opens more doors externally. Walmart’s pay is competitive, but the external perception still lags.
I’ve been in tech 8 years and never even considered Walmart until recently.
That’s the perception problem—they’re paying well but the brand feels outdated.
Microsoft gives more in stock. Over four years that adds up big.
Plus their vesting schedule is front-loaded. Walmart’s is even.
And don’t forget MS offers more lateral mobility internally.
Walmart Labs has solid projects, but they don’t market them.
100%. Some of the machine learning work is legit. But no visibility.
I’d still choose Microsoft for the resume boost. That name opens more doors.
Even if comp is close, the long-term value is higher with MS.
Sunnyvale roles pay more than Bentonville though. Location plays a big part.
Cost of living ki^ls that increase though. Bentonville stretches a dollar way further.
And Walmart pays for relo and housing in some tech roles.
I applied to both and Walmart’s process was actually more structured.
Remote flexibility seems better at Microsoft. Walmart’s still stricter depending on team.
Some Walmart teams do hybrid well. Others force office days just to sit on Zoom.
I started at Microsoft and moved to Walmart for faster promotion. Wild but true.
That’s rare. Curious how that played out.
Does Walmart offer sabbaticals like Microsoft does?
Tech comp is only one part—culture and dev tools matter too. Microsoft wins there hands down.
Most people overlook Walmart because it’s not a “cool” tech brand, but the infrastructure they’re building is massive.
That scale is exactly why it’s so valuable. Billions of transactions, real-time logistics—huge datasets.
It’s real-world engineering with direct impact. Just doesn’t get hyped on tech blogs.
Walmart doesn’t match Microsoft’s 401(k) either. MS does 50% match up to the IRS limit.

204K is solid, but most people don’t associate Walmart with serious engineering work.
