You’re trying to listen for your department call, but three walkies are all going off at once. Someone’s joking on one channel, another’s calling for code 300, and a third is paging backup to a register you don’t even work. Meanwhile, you’re answering a customer’s question mid-beep while trying to scan and zone at the same time. By the time your lead finally radios you, you’re already two tasks deep in something else.
And they always expect you to catch it the first time, too.
My favorite is when they say “you didn’t respond” like I wasn’t juggling five things.
Our store has the most chaotic walkie etiquette. One person tells a story, another interrupts with codes, and no one clears the channel.
That one person who treats it like their podcast mic is the worst.
The amount of “can y’all stop playing on channel 1” we hear daily is unreal.
It’s always “clear the channel,” but then five people talk at once.
You ever try to respond but your walkie won’t unmute fast enough?
Constantly. You hold the button like it’s a prayer.
Mine cuts out right after I say my name. Makes me sound like I ghosted.
Why do managers call backup to registers on walkie, but ignore actual register calls?
Every. Time. I’ve watched them walk past ringing lanes like it’s not their problem.
I once answered a walkie call and got scolded for not “waiting my turn.” What turn? It’s chaos.
