That overnight shift where freight wouldn’t end

Overnight started off fine. Decent truck, backroom looked manageable. Then a second truck showed up. Cool, we can handle it. Then grocery called out, and half the team got pulled to cover it.

The freight kept coming, the walkie kept calling for backup, and suddenly I’m stocking both sides of the store because “it needs to be pushed tonight.” By 4AM, it wasn’t about catching up anymore—it was about survival. My hands were freezing from the dairy pulls, my back was s^ot from moving pet food pallets, and management just kept saying, “We’re almost there.”

We weren’t almost there. We still had half the truck to go. Somehow we finished most of it, but I walked out that morning feeling like I’d done a double shift. Overnight grind never lets you off easy.
