Mental health days off

I have been here for a year so I'm not sure how these things work. Would I be laughed at if I asked for a few mental health days off? I've been having some issues that have caused my mental health to deteriorate significantly, and I need a few days to just unplug from the world to recover. At the same time, the last thing I need right now is to be fired, so I don't want to risk it. What can I do in this situation? On a related note, isn't it messed up that I most likely have to choose between my job and my mental health?

You’re not alone in this. Your health comes first, even if companies don’t always see it that way. See if you can use PTO or a sick day to cover it.

It’s ridiculous that we even have to ask if mental health days are acceptable. They should be treated just like physical health days.
