Leading by example is much more important than you think

I’m a team lead at Walmart and I made the mistake of chewing gum on the clock. What happens next, 2 of my associates had the freedom to chew their gum as well. Then I had to talk to them about my mistake. I told them sorry for creating confusion but they in fact can’t do that, also I can’t do that but I just forgot. I tried to tell them it was an honest mistake and I once again apologized for my mistake. This made me realize that I’m being watched by my associates and I should set an example for them, like a right example that will benefit them when they follow it. So if there are any other team leads or other managers here, please be careful and don’t make the same mistake that I did. Work hard, be humble, set an example, and apologize if you need to. It’s not the end of the world believe me. It doesn’t make you some weak leader who can’t lead the way. It just shows that you are a good human being who can apologize if needed.

I don't know why these small details are so important at Walmart. What changes if a chew a piece of gum or not?

It's not a good look for the store. Some customers may feel disrespected because of it and that's why walmart doesn't want you to run around with a piece of gum in your mouth.

They should be fine as long as they don't get caught. It shouldn't be too hard to hide your gum in your mouth right? If you are really obsessed with it that much, then hide it.
