Forgetting to clock in: How serious? Any tips?

I started working just a couple of months ago, and this is the third time in a row I've had to do a manual time adjustment because I keep forgetting to clock in on time after lunch. No one has mentioned it yet, but I've heard enough stories about time theft investigations to get myself worried. Do they give you a warning before any formal investigation begins? Also, does anyone have any tips on how to make sure I remember to clock in? I really can't afford to be involved in any kind of disciplinary mess right now.

there's no need to worry if it's only happened a few times. investigations typically begin if there are frequent time adjustments that raise suspicion. as far as I know, one would probably be called into the office for a discussion before any formal investigation starts.
